On the back cover of the book, there is a comment about how The Price of Salt compares to Lolita. In the context of censorship, I find this pretty interesting. Lolita has a well established "controversial" connotation, and I wonder how the parallels between the two influenced The Price of Salt's popularity and prevalence. Thus far into the book, I can't see how lesbians rank next to pedophilia as controversial. Granted that's my more modern opinion, but I think involving children should endemically make pedophilia far more controversial. With that in mind, perhaps Lolita's controversy was what propelled it to popularity; The Price of Salt may have been over shadowed by a more extreme case, rather than shunned because of its controversy. Either way, I think the comparisons made are interesting to follow; I can't say I would have made a connection otherwise.
