Who to root for?

Usually when I read a story, I want to find some character to identify with or to root for. I find traces of myself in a character, often the protagonist, which allows me to get invested in a story, and hope that things work out for them in the end. I can see the pride that underlies John Proctor's actions, which allows me to take his side in the story. I can understand the "teenage angst" of Holden Caulfield, and can hope that he'll get through it and be a better person for it. But so far, I haven't been able to root for any of the characters so far.

I can't get myself to like Therese at all. I know she's still young and she's going to make some mistakes, but I really don't like the way she's handling her confused situation. While Richard dismisses her relationship with Carol, she knows the truth about how deep her feelings are, but doesn't fill him in. By allowing him to keep his perception, she's leading him on and doing him wrong. If you know you're not going to be with someone, it's wrong to keep them in a relationship under false pretenses, preventing them from finding true happiness elsewhere. And how irresponsible is Carol? I'm not saying that the social conditions were right, but she knew what the deal was. She knew if she pursued a relationship with Therese, it would damage her custody chances with her daughter. But she still leaves her family and goes west with Therese.

So who can we root for? Richard? No, he's just a sucker. If this guy is dumb enough to get played by his girl, who's not even totally into guys, then whatever happens to him is partially his own fault. Harge? Although I admire his aggressive attempts to get custody of his daughter, I don't approve of his methods. So now I guess I'm just hoping for a bland resolution, split custody, with no one really happy in the end.
